Clinton’s visit to B&H is the major topic of the day. He spoke today in Sarajevo with the RS President and members of the Presidency of B&H, and visited American soldiers stationed near Tuzla.

The RS President went to SA early this morning. There the President met USA President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and their assistants. They spoke for 30 minutes in a closed meeting. After the meetings Mr. Clinton gave a speech in the Theatre in Sarajevo. Alija Izetbegovic, Kresimir Zubak, Boro Bosic and other officials and politicians from both the RS and B&H Federation such as Zivko Radisic, president of Socialist Party of RS and Mile Dodik, president of Party of Independent Social Democrats were present.

“Everybody who is committed to the persistent implementation of the DA will have the support of the USA and the IC while the ones opposing it will be isolated,” Mr. Clinton said and continued addressing the gathered politicians:
“Your responsibility is to turn the documents signed in Dayton into living reality. The world which continues to invest in your peace expects results. What is even more important is that the people are expecting them.”.

The US President spoke about return of refugees, minorities, the Police, freedom of the media, arrest of war criminals, the economy, laws, etc.

Here are the very first reactions to Clinton’s visit to B&H:
The American President, Bill Clinton, is trying to convince the Congress and American public that the SFOR peace mission in B&H must be extended for as long as necessary. Clinton will warn the RS President that the continuation of political support will depend on her cooperation in the realisation of the DA which implies return of refugees, the Financial Times finds today.

Mr. Schilling, the international mediator for B&H, stated today for the Oslobodjenje that he hoped that the High Representative, Carlos Westendorp, would soon apply in practice the competencies he had obtained at the Bonn Conference. He added that the High Representative could remove those opposing the Peace Process.

The implementation must be done simultaneously, with the same intensity in the RS and in the Federation, he said and informed that he would meet the RS President on December 26th.

The Muslim representatives in the B&H Presidency do not want to accept the High Representative’s decree on the Law on citizenship. The reason is the dual citizenship that Serbs and Croats are allowed to get, German media state today.

The presidents of SDS and Serb Radical Party started talks today in Bijeljina relating to the first constitutive session of the RS NA. The meetings are closed and the results will be announced at a press conference.
