Peace Implementation Council

The Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council, meeting in Paris today, formally appointed Christian Schwarz-Schilling as the next High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Steering Board looks forward to working with Dr. Schwarz-Schilling when he takes up his duties as High Representative on 31 January 2006.

The Political Directors of the Peace Implementation Council Steering Board met in Sarajevo on 6 and 7 October. "The Steering Board Ambassadors meeting today reiterated that negotiations on police reform need to conclude before BiH can begin negotiations with the EU for an SAA. Time is fast running for BiH to be able to achieve this ambition by the 10th Anniversary of Dayton.

On the occasion of the imminent tenth anniversary of the massacre at Srebrenica on 11 July, the Steering Board solemnly remembered the victims of this terrible crime and the suffering of their friends and families.

PIC Steering Board Ambassadors deeply regret President Covic’s announcement that he intends to remain in office despite the criminal indictment confirmed against him by the BiH Court. They stand by their statement of 20 March, and call on Dr Covic, even at this late stage, to re-consider his decision while that option remains available to him.
